Fall Style

Fall Trend: Statement Coats (literally)

Whatever your thoughts are on the now infamous coat worn by the First Lady, she ignited a trend. Everywhere you look there are jackets making a statement, and I mean that literally. It seems as though you can not find a T-shirt without something written on it these days: Feminist, Love Wins, Rose All Day and the list goes on… Now this is translating to jackets and coats. There is a desire to have our clothes literally say something about who we are, what we are thinking and how we are feeling. And most of all, a way of expressing our fabulousness (is that a word?).

A message I personally prefer is that of the “love letter” jacket by Cinq a Sept. This is a fun, versatile jacket that would look adorable paired with skinny jeans and Stan Smiths.

And then you have the very literal brand Off White with the creation of this self-proclaimed “biker” jacket.

Looking for a lower price point? I have you covered. Fashion Nova just released this “Flawless” denim jacket perfect for this era of women’s empowerment and self-love.

I love to hear from you guys so let me know your thoughts on this trend, any other fall  trend and Melania. 🙂

Until next time, stay fabulous!

Proenza Schouler PA

One of the perks of my job is that we have public appearances by some of the top designers in the industry. Last week the designers for Proenza Schouler, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez came to the store for an event. They spoke about their Spring and Fall 2018 collections, the launch of their new fragrance, Arizona, and a little about their background as designers. Their spring collection is very feminine with the use floral prints, silk and lace materials and flowing silhouettes. The Fall 2018 collection is quite a departure, drawing inspiration from “women’s lib” and the artist Sheila Hicks whose use of fibers and hardware is seen as very Americana and a reflection of the hardworking women of past generations. Metals, fringe, and tie dye fabrics are used to emulate the modern women of defiance and strength.

Here are a few of my favorite pieces from the Fall collections. To shop the brand click here or on the images below.

Fall Back Essentials

Fall Back Essentials
Daylight savings is great  in that we don’t have to wake up in the dark any longer. But as the day goes on and I get tired earlier in the day because it’s actually an hour later, I need some pick me up items to keep me going while I adjust.
First off, a good face scrub for the dry skin that starts to appear from the cold weather is a must. I like Mario Badescu’s Strawberry Facial Scrub.  Then apply a good moisturizer (naturally). I love the Kiehls “daily revive” serum to help keep my skin looking healthy and alive all day long. You can’t forget lipgloss, I love the new holiday collection by Nars.  Throw on a good scarf before leaving the house. I always wear a scarf. It’s a great throw on piece when it gets cold and easy to stow away in your bag when you don’t need it. An added bonus is they look so chic!
Make sure you leave enough time to grab a Starbucks seasonal Pumpkin Spice latte
for the commute.
Candles, candles and some more candles…
After a long day, light some scented candles to brighten and stimulate the senses when it begins getting dark at 4pm. Dyptique is a wonderful brand but I’ve been told there are some really good ones from Magnolia for Target.
What are your tips for surviving the shorter days?

Morning routine to go from feeling “Blah” to “Fab”

You probably know the feeling, forgetting to set your alarm and waking up to frantically get yourself, and perhaps your children, ready for the day. It’s not a good start. This was my morning and I’m still having a tough time getting out of the fog. Sitting at my computer trying to plan my social media calendar and thinking of everything else I need to do to prepare for a successful week. It’s proving to be quite challenging and to be quite honest, futile. It has me thinking about how to combat the fatigue and fogginess I feel and take on the day rather than think about the next time my head will hit my pillow.

Here are a few tips I came up with to get you out of that funk and feeling fabulous.

  1. Splash water on your face, pinch your cheeks and slather on that foundation. This will wake you up, get the blood flowing and foundation, or I like to use a tinted moisturizer by Laura Mercier, is always a necessary start to your day.
  2. Hydrate. Grab your S’well water bottle and drink up. Coffee is always in my morning routine, but hydrating is more important. It helps get your metabolism going and de-fog your brain.
  3. Put a little thought into your wardrobe. Everyone should have a “uniform”, a go to look that they know they look good in. When in doubt, where black. It’s slimming and look great on everyone. Top it off with a nice jacket- you must have a go to jacket that makes you feel more put together? My go to jackets: denim, cropped leather or a blazer.

4. Eat something. I always have protein bars in my bag for when I’m in a rush. These are my favorites. You don’t want to get “hangry” so be prepared.

5. Lipgloss is a must. Add some color to that face with a nice pink lip, or red is a nice way to really add some drama to your look. I love these by Trish McCevoy.

6. Have a go to soundtrack that will get you pumped. Whether in your car or riding the train, music is such a great way to change your mood and really feel like you can take on the day. One of my favorites to jam out to right now is Katy Perry’s “Swish Swish”, it really taps into that girl power vibe I need to get motivated in the a.m.

Making “Fast Fashion” Work for you.

“Fast fashion is a contemporary term used by fashion retailers to express that designs move from the catwalk quickly to capture current fashion trends.”

Keeping up with the trends isn’t easy. These days it’s simple for retailers to put out different designs based on what’s just been on the catwalk and to “knock off” designer duds within a week or month. Staying fresh is not an easy task. I work at a luxury retailer so I have a deep appreciation for designer made clothes, shoes and accessories. However it’s not lost on me that these things are out of reach of the average person, myself included.

Retailers like H&M, Forever 21, Zara and the like have made being on trend, current and fashionable a possibility for the average person. With that in mind it’s not always easy to pick through the massive amounts of inventory they have to find the items that work for you.

Here are some of my favorite pieces that reflect current styles and just might be right for you, if you have any questions about how to wear these or other styles please feel free to email me: hilary@welldressedboston.com

  1. H&M Viscose Floral Dress. This reminds me of the dresses and boots that Victoria Beckham has been seen in recently and is a look that many can pull off. It’s not tight, shear or short! It’s a pretty, comfortable and confident look. hmviscosefloraldress2) Paper Waist Culottes from Forever 21.  The way it’s styles is cute and a great going out look, or if you’re a stylist like me you could wear it to work. But if you need a more “buttoned up” look I would pair these with some boots like the look above. A maroon or red color. A button down or cami with a  sweater or jacket make it perfect for work.                                              forever21paperbagculottes3) Zara embellished sock booties. Did you know that Zara has one of the best shoe shops?! And these sock booties are a great addition to anyone’s wardrobe looking to be on trend and fashionable this fall.

My favorite fall fashion.

Layering. I adore layers and being able to drape myself in all sorts of sweaters, jackets, tops, scarves etc. Maybe it’s because I feel as though I can really maximize my wardrobe by wearing so many different pieces, but it’s such a fun way to express yourself and keep cozy at the same time.

Below are some of my favorite layering pieces. What’s yours?

Duster Jacket from the Guess Factory Store.

A white button down is essential for layering. Where it under sweaters, jackets, vests and tank… it’s one of the most versatile pieces. This image was found on Pinterest.  (I love the red booties!)

I’m going to have to make this  a 2 part article as I have thought of so many other layering ideas as I’ve been writing this!  Stay tuned.

Do you have any questions about how to layer? What’s your favorite layering piece?
