Preparing for fitness success.

It’s no surprise that most New Years resolutions involve getting fit and healthy. A good way to get started is researching healthy diets, maybe signing up for a gym membership and my favorite part… shopping for new workout clothes! Sounds silly but your workout attire can increase your likelihood of getting to the gym by 52%! Ok, that’s a totally made up statistic. Nonetheless it’s absolutely true that the way you dress affects how you feel, your confidence and how much success you will have in what you are trying to accomplish. I can’t force you to get a workout in but I can recommend some pretty dope gear to get you started.

First up, bottoms. From leggings to joggers there are so many options. And the best part is they can be versatile allowing you to wear them for more than just a workout. For example I love my Spanx leggings, they’re perfect for a sleek look and booty lift to give you the confidence boost you may be requiring to get back to the gym. Plus you can dress them up with flats and an oversized shirt like you see it here… (click the image to shop)

For a fun look the Ultracor  designs are always a good pick, plus they’re one of the best compression leggings you can find giving you great circulation and comfort.

And then of course you have your joggers. I love this “paint splatter” pair by Monrow for looking comfortably cool.

On top.

I like to layer simple tanks and sports bras. Nothing crazy. I like this one by Beyond Yoga, a perfect layering piece.

This velvet sports bra by Alo Yoga is so luxurious.

For a fun top piece this Fila crop is perfect to wear alone or with a tank under neath.

And one must have a hoodie or two to complete the look. 🙂 I love this camo one, also by Monrow, it goes with everything.

Alright that’s enough for today. I still need to get into foot wear which will require a whole other post so I’ll save that for next time.

Making “Fast Fashion” Work for you.

“Fast fashion is a contemporary term used by fashion retailers to express that designs move from the catwalk quickly to capture current fashion trends.”

Keeping up with the trends isn’t easy. These days it’s simple for retailers to put out different designs based on what’s just been on the catwalk and to “knock off” designer duds within a week or month. Staying fresh is not an easy task. I work at a luxury retailer so I have a deep appreciation for designer made clothes, shoes and accessories. However it’s not lost on me that these things are out of reach of the average person, myself included.

Retailers like H&M, Forever 21, Zara and the like have made being on trend, current and fashionable a possibility for the average person. With that in mind it’s not always easy to pick through the massive amounts of inventory they have to find the items that work for you.

Here are some of my favorite pieces that reflect current styles and just might be right for you, if you have any questions about how to wear these or other styles please feel free to email me: hilary@welldressedboston.com

  1. H&M Viscose Floral Dress. This reminds me of the dresses and boots that Victoria Beckham has been seen in recently and is a look that many can pull off. It’s not tight, shear or short! It’s a pretty, comfortable and confident look. hmviscosefloraldress2) Paper Waist Culottes from Forever 21.  The way it’s styles is cute and a great going out look, or if you’re a stylist like me you could wear it to work. But if you need a more “buttoned up” look I would pair these with some boots like the look above. A maroon or red color. A button down or cami with a  sweater or jacket make it perfect for work.                                              forever21paperbagculottes3) Zara embellished sock booties. Did you know that Zara has one of the best shoe shops?! And these sock booties are a great addition to anyone’s wardrobe looking to be on trend and fashionable this fall.

My favorite fall fashion.

Layering. I adore layers and being able to drape myself in all sorts of sweaters, jackets, tops, scarves etc. Maybe it’s because I feel as though I can really maximize my wardrobe by wearing so many different pieces, but it’s such a fun way to express yourself and keep cozy at the same time.

Below are some of my favorite layering pieces. What’s yours?

Duster Jacket from the Guess Factory Store.

A white button down is essential for layering. Where it under sweaters, jackets, vests and tank… it’s one of the most versatile pieces. This image was found on Pinterest.  (I love the red booties!)

I’m going to have to make this  a 2 part article as I have thought of so many other layering ideas as I’ve been writing this!  Stay tuned.

Do you have any questions about how to layer? What’s your favorite layering piece?

5 Stylist tips for staying red carpet ready.

Carlaswedding

I was in my good friends wedding this past weekend. It was a beautiful celebration and I loved being a part of it! That being said, it’s a long day when you start getting ready in the afternoon and want your look to last through the ceremony, pictures and reception. You might not be walking the red carpet, but we all have occasions when we want to stay looking beautiful and feeling fresh all day. Weddings and special events call for some added rituals that will help you look and feel your best.

Here are a tips from celebrity stylists (and myself) on how they keep the stars looking red carpet ready through long events.

  1. Deodorant on your face. This is a trick that keeps your face free of sweat. Use a make-up brush to apply a fragrance free, clear and preferably organic, antiperspirant to the areas of your face that tend to sweat. I.E. your hair-line and upper lip. Make sure to give this method a test run before the big event as some  may have a bad reaction. (reference Refinery29)
  2. Concealer on your lips. This is a trick you see many make-up artists use on YouTube. It helps you apply lip liner and lipstick more evenly and give them staying power.
  3. Apply a creamy eye treatment under your eyes. This helps keep your eye make-up in place and from creasing and falling into cracks. Make-up artist Janice Kinjo recommends Kiehls Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado. (reference Huffington Post)
  4. Blow dry your eye lashes. To help your eye lashes curl better, Isla Fisher recommends taking a blow dryer to your eye lash curler for a few seconds before using it. It also helps them stay in place longer. (reference InStyle.com)
  5. Check you posture. Good posture shows poise and confidence. A good way to make sure you’re standing (or sitting) tall is to roll your shoulders back, this forces your whole body to straighten up.
  6. Smile a lot! Every woman looks their most gorgeous when they’re smiling. So smile often. A good trick that Jessica Chastain shares is to put your tongue behind your teeth to keep from over smiling and appearing to “gummy”.

Do you have any tips you can share?

Hilary

The must have item.

T-shirts. I live in them. They are comfortable, fashionable and the ultimate statement of who you are. Nowadays you can dress um up or down, wearing them with jeans or sequins. They are the ultimate in versatility and comfortability. Everyone should have a good t-shirt in their wardrobe. From 18 to 80, these pieces can look great on everyone as long as you style it appropriately.

Don’t be afraid to splurge a little on one, they are looks that last. Here are a few of my favorite t-shirts out right now…

Vivienne Westwood Middling T-shirt inspired by her Anglomania collection. Paired with these plaid pants, as shown on her site, this look is perfection. The unique style of the shirt and complex statement of plaid suggests “sophistication with an edge”.

Comme des Garçons Play T-shirt. Emblazoned with their signature logo, this t-shirt is sweet and luxurious. You can’t help but smile when you see the cheeky heart with its big oval eyes. One of my favorite ways to wear a T is with a flowy skirt as shown. I love the juxtoposotion of styles. The elegant skirt with a relaxed T is such a cool statement.

Givenchy Star T. I’m sort of obsessed with stars right now so this design is perfect for me. A simple statement piece. Leather is always a good idea so pairing it with this mini is my idea of perfect streetwear or for me, work wear (#lovemyjob).

London Street Style.

As much as I love seeing the latest from the runways of fashion week what I really enjoy are the styles worn on the streets. There’s a heightened state of fashion awareness during fashion month and a bevy of fashionistas hitting the streets of New York, London, Paris and Milan to show off their tasteful and artistic interpretations of style. Many flock to the shows, or not even to the shows just to the general vicinity of where they take place, to try to get noticed.

Here are some of my favorite looks from the streets of this year’s London Fashion Week. I love street styles that are classic and sophisticated, but have something that make them different. I like when a person shows that they are willing to take risks. Even if I wouldn’t necessarily wear the style myself or recommend it to a client,  it’s more of an admiration of someone’s willingness to think and do something outside of the box.

What’s your favorite look?

My favorite trend on the Emmys red carpet and how to wear it.

Velvet. I love this look by Ralph Lauren on Shailene Woodley. The color is perfect on her and velvet is so luscious and is not only a great material for a red carpet occasion but very on trend and stylish for any occasion. Below are 3 ways I suggest wearing it this season.
