Preparing for fitness success.

It’s no surprise that most New Years resolutions involve getting fit and healthy. A good way to get started is researching healthy diets, maybe signing up for a gym membership and my favorite part… shopping for new workout clothes! Sounds silly but your workout attire can increase your likelihood of getting to the gym by 52%! Ok, that’s a totally made up statistic. Nonetheless it’s absolutely true that the way you dress affects how you feel, your confidence and how much success you will have in what you are trying to accomplish. I can’t force you to get a workout in but I can recommend some pretty dope gear to get you started.

First up, bottoms. From leggings to joggers there are so many options. And the best part is they can be versatile allowing you to wear them for more than just a workout. For example I love my Spanx leggings, they’re perfect for a sleek look and booty lift to give you the confidence boost you may be requiring to get back to the gym. Plus you can dress them up with flats and an oversized shirt like you see it here… (click the image to shop)

For a fun look the Ultracor  designs are always a good pick, plus they’re one of the best compression leggings you can find giving you great circulation and comfort.

And then of course you have your joggers. I love this “paint splatter” pair by Monrow for looking comfortably cool.

On top.

I like to layer simple tanks and sports bras. Nothing crazy. I like this one by Beyond Yoga, a perfect layering piece.

This velvet sports bra by Alo Yoga is so luxurious.

For a fun top piece this Fila crop is perfect to wear alone or with a tank under neath.

And one must have a hoodie or two to complete the look. 🙂 I love this camo one, also by Monrow, it goes with everything.

Alright that’s enough for today. I still need to get into foot wear which will require a whole other post so I’ll save that for next time.

Alexis Jones: I am that girl.

I love writing about strong woman with purpose. And I love listening to what they have to say. Marie Forleo is one of those women. One of her many admirable talents is that she shares her platform of influence with others on Marie TV. She interviews lots of women (and men) with a wonderfully relaxed intimacy and is able to pull something out of them you might not normally see.

I watched an interview she had with Alexis Jones, creator of IAmthatGirl.org. I had no idea who Alexis Jones was until I watched this episode of Marie TV.  Turns out she’s pretty fascinating. Not only does she run the women and girls empowerment organization (I Am That Girl) but she gives talks to athletes about sexual assault and violence against women. Her method of teaching about the subject and ways of combatting these issues is a bit avant-garde.

She is a pioneer in bringing men “into the conversation” about sexual assault instead of making them feel demonized and as though they are the enemy.  Her explanation is that men and people in general, shut down when you ridicule them and talk about how horrible they are when most of these men and boys haven’t done anything wrong. Making blanket statements that portray a group of people in a negative light doesn’t serve anyone. It simply pits groups of people against one another and stops any constructive conversation on how to fix the problem.

What Alexis attempts to do is bring male athletes into that conversation. Talking about sexual assault and violence in a way that is personal to them and makes them feel empowered to “be the hero” in a sense, by trying to change the culture that has enabled these acts to go on for so long.

To find out more about her incredible organization and how you can take part in this positive movement visit her web site: iamthatgirl.org. Oh… and by the book…

And of course I have to include a fashion component to this article. I love her laid back, athletic style and signature trucker hat. The best thing about the hat is that it raises money for “Protect Her” a chapter of I Am that Girl.

“ProtectHer, founded by Alexis Jones (who also founded I AM THAT GIRL!), is all about empowering male athletes and young men everywhere to respect the women in their lives. Learn more about ProtectHer here.”

I love my job because it gives me the opportunity to experiment with different fashion trends. But on the regular, I’m in my “mom uniform” of leggings and a cute top. The reason for this is two-fold, it’s comfortable and I can workout in it. I don’t want to get dressed up when I’m chasing a toddler around who will most likely wipe his jelly hands on me at some point during the day.

Luckily there are a lot of fashionable and comfortable clothes choose from to make life a not just comfortable but fashionable. Here are some of my favorites from the ASOS web-site:
Puma sweatshirt, an ASOS exclusive:

Reebok Metallic High Rise Leggings. I live in black leggings, it may be considered boring but they’re always flattering, go with anything and the “metallic” on these give it a little something extra.

I love crop tops. I know there’s a fear of them, but you can always throw a cami underneath for a cute layered look if you’re scared to bare your midriff.

I love the look of a crop top with a baggy pant like this pair from Adidas.

adidas Mix Up Pants In Gray

I like a basic tank to workout in, nothing fancy. No weird loops or bows, keep it simple. Nothing says “suburban house wife” like a Lululeman top with a complicated tie back and cutouts on the side. I prefer something like this Converse high neck top.

Adidas Prophere originals in black and pink.
